Rebranding: when to change and when it's a mistake
A rebrand changes how people see a company and usually touches much more than the logo. It is worth starting only when there is a strong reason.
When a rebrand IS needed
- The image is dated. Sberbank → Sber: a move to a modern, minimalist logo.
- The strategy has changed. VKontakte → VK: a name change to position the company as a global IT platform.
- A reputation crisis. The brand is firmly associated with a scandal.
- The audience has changed. You need to attract young people, and the brand speaks their parents' language.
When a rebrand is NOT needed
- You're just "tired of it". Changing the image without a strategic reason is a risky move.
- The problem is the product. A rebrand won't fix bad service.
- There's no clear plan. If it's unclear what the brand should become, the changes will be vague.
- "Being like everyone else". Blindly copying competitors takes away what makes you different.
Bottom line: a rebrand is justified when it solves a specific business problem. Without that goal you can spend a huge amount of money and lose customers.
